Old Course tee time allocations 2018 – changes afoot at St Andrews
How the tee time allocation process is changing
In 2018 St Andrews Links Trust is to take control of commercial tee time operations.
At the end of 2016 St Andrews Links Trust announced that the agreement with its commercial tee time partner Old Course Experience will cease at the end of 2017. It will assume responsibility for the distribution of all commercial Old Course tee times for the season commencing April 2018.
Time will tell; but potentially, this is great news for visiting golfers. Where Old Course Experience provided premium, high-end Old Course stay and play packages, combining prime tee times with 4 and 5 star accommodations only, the new supply channels for these tee times could offer a wider range of accommodation type and quality, with a wider range of prices too.
In preparation for the change, St Andrews Links has been developing and managing a closer working relationship with multiple tour operators and accommodation providers in St Andrews.
In early 2017, tour operators were invited to register as a commercial operator with the Links Trust and apply for an allocation of tee times.
Successful commercial operators and accommodation providers will receive an allocation of tee times and enjoy ‘Authorised Provider’ status.
Authorised Providers should be announced by the end of March 2017 and tee time availability for 2018 known around June 2017.

Some things to note:
– These commercial Old Course guaranteed tee times are only available in ‘Stay and Play’ packages where golf tee times are sold in conjunction with a stay in local hotel and guest house accommodation.
– These changes only apply to advance commercial tee times on the Old Course.
They don’t affect existing practices for getting on the Old Course. So, the private advance booking process for golfers to apply directly in late August/early September will still take place as in previous years.
Of course, there will still also be the daily ballot as an option for golfers who have been unable to secure a guaranteed advance booking.
See here for a review of the existing practices.
– 2018 will be a busy time on St Andrews Links
The Old Course will be hosting the Senior Open Championship from July 26-29 so the course will be closed during the tournament and most likely for a prior period to aid preparations.
Also, the Open Championship in nearby Carnoustie from 16-22 July will undoubtedly create extra interest in staying and playing at St Andrews.
