The Alto Club, Sotogrande (formerly Almenara)

Overview

The Alto Club, located at the very top of Sotogrande Alto, is a golf complex that belongs to SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort Hotel.

Part of the Sotogrande urbanisation which includes fine courses such as Valderrama, La Reserva and Real Sotogrande it offers great golf value similar to La Canada.

Formerly named Almenara and designed by Dave Thomas, who laid down a marker in the area with his design of San Roque Old Course. The course, originally played as three 9 hole loops, was redesigned by Manual Piñero, the rebranded resort complex and course re opened in 2025. It now comprises:

• The Alto Club – a full 18 hole 5,903m course off G.O.A.T
• The Par 3 – a 9 hole course
• ‘Pitch & Putt’ – laid out over over 18 holes
• Executive Course (Par 29)

Rather than white, yellow, blue & red tees, players now match their ability to an animal – G.O.AT, Bull, Vulture and Deer.

The key natural features of the original 3 loops remain – Los Pinos (the mature pines) and Los Lagos (the lakes) were used to form the new 18 hole course and the Golf Academy is based around the former Alcornoques (cork oaks) course.

The complex includes The Alto Club Golf Academy led by Suzann Pettersen (former Solheim Cup captain), where The Alto Cafe is located, golf reception, pro shop & locker room and the Clubhouse, SoCiety, based at the Hotel.
